The Chico Peace Vigil is a longstanding tradition in Chico, California, dedicated to promoting peace and opposing war and violence. Established in the early 1960s during the tense Cold War era, the vigil began when local residents Wilhelmina Taggart, Florence McLane, and Helen Kinnee started holding weekly gatherings to pray for peace. Their efforts led to the removal of Titan missiles that were being constructed in northeast Chico at the time.
Since then, the vigil has continued uninterrupted every Saturday at the corner of 3rd and Main Streets from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Participants come together to advocate for an end to war and violence, holding signs and engaging with passersby to raise awareness about peace and social justice issues.
